TV GUIDE DISCUSSES "CHUCK" SEASON 5 STATUS!

9:16 AM / Posted by Sheldon /

9 February 2011,
TV Guide's Matt Roush answers a question about Chuck Season 5, tells us when we can expect the renewal/cancellation news and his thoughts on a pick-up.

Question: Chuck is one of my favorite shows, but lately it seems to be heading towards an ultimate finale by wrapping up many story lines. Does this mean the producers think it is going to get cancelled? Has NBC indicated that it wasn't going to get picked up next season? — Stan

Matt Roush: When hasn't Chuck lived on the bubble? As usual, we're not likely to know whether Chuck gets a fifth season until the fall schedule is announced in May. Fans are used to that, and so are the producers. Your observations are on point, though, because the writers went into this season with a 13-episode order and constructed the arc involving Volkoff and Chuck's mom with that in mind. Last week's episode, the 13th, was designed to work as a season finale or maybe even a series finale, which is why it sometimes felt like they were rushing to wrap things up. Ellie giving birth, Chuck finally proposing to Sarah, lots of closure there. But NBC upped Chuck's order to a full season, so while there's now more story to tell, it means fans will once again be sweating out news of the show's future for the next few months. Complicating matters is the NBC-Comcast merger with new management overseeing the entertainment division. All bets are off right now in predicting what's staying and what's going and what NBC prime time will look like next season.

For a little perspective, I think Chuck has more going for it than any other show with its ratings would have. For one, we already know it's fairly cheap to produce, since they've cut the budget as much as they could before season 3. They've also got an advertising partner in Subway, so that helps. I would think Chuck probably brings in as much money as shows that get better ratings. It's also only a season away from syndication, where it would undoubtedly have a following.
It's also still on Mondays with a very loyal audience, so they could, in theory, move it to Fridays and probably keep the ratings it gets now -- which would win that time slot for NBC.

chuck 's changed a lot from season 1 to 4. hope they will bring a season 5!

In my opinion, NBC has bungled the handling of CHUCK from the very beginning of the show. Season 2 of CHUCK was by far the best TV series we've seen in a long time. It's a quality show with quality writers and actors. I'm really hoping NBC does the right thing and picks it up for a fifth season.

i dont care about all the technical stuff involved in the come back of Chuck. All i want is another one or two seasons of my favorite tv show!

Anonymous on February 9, 2011 at 2:38 PM

I absolutely love chuck!! And I've enjoyed everyone of my Chinese & Chuck Mondays since midway season 2. Yeah, I don't want my favorite show to end, but in reality, how many more angles can they take without killing someone important off? I thought Chuck's dad was amazing, and it really sucked when they killed him; very traumatic. But now that they've explored pretty much every character, and have fought through the biggest baddies, what else can they do?

I only have two favorite shows which tie for that position, and coincidentally, Josh Schwartz writes the other one as well: The OC. I was sad to see it go after season 4, but sometimes, there just isnt a new angle to take and you gotta throw in the towel so as to not lose the integrity that was built up by the previous seasons.

I do hope for a season 5, and I do hope that the writers can come up with anoter unique script for it and keep at it.

to keep chuck the writers have to find a way to reshape the show like they did with the new intersect.

Fej1099 on February 9, 2011 at 6:30 PM

I love Chuck. I feel the writers are going in a great direction. I see them exploring Sara's family as well as her past more. I think it could be a very intresting direction with a wedding coming at some point to pull it all together. She has alot in her closet to explore, CIA life as well as what make her tick . Chuck has and always will have AWESOME characters and you can't help but root for the eternal Nerd CHUCK.

chuckrocks on February 9, 2011 at 8:05 PM

I just can't think that NBC would take a show that might not have the best ratings, but has always been consistent and cancel it when so many of their new shows are such duds. They won't find a show with more loyal fans, awesome actors, and such creative writers to keep the show so fresh. It has been such a fun journey to watch the characters grow and change, and they have done it in such a natural way. I have written my letter to NBC, ALWAYS watch live, plus record on 3 DVR's, I have bought over a dozen CHUCK items from the NBC store, and continue to tweet, and talk about CHUCK on facebook, and anyone else who will listen. If there is any other way I can help let me know if I have missed something.

I believe there are several angles in which the writers can redirect the show for a fifth season and beyond, but many on this board would not like my suggestions.
Everything is around Sara secret past, I believe this was intentionally done by the producers.
We are going to see some of her past next week with the Cat squad.
Questions:
1 How did she finish her High School education?
2 Where did she get a college degree or did she get a degree?
3 Beside her relationship with the Cat Squad, what other relationships did she form before becoming a Spy.
4 Why did the CIA save her father by arresting him and taking her in for the reason to become a Spy. Is there more to this relationship between her father and the CIA? These things were never explained.
5 Yes! her Mother , is she alive, if so where has she been, has Sara and her mother communicated behind the scenes without us knowing as well as Chuck?
All these question can lead to problems for the future Mr and Mrs Chuck or lead them down a road such as the the first three years of Chuck in dealing with Chuck family, hopefully the next several years they will deal with Sara family and friends.

A lot of people will probably hate me for this, but part of me wants to see this be the last season. Had episode 13 been the series finale I would have been fine with it.

Over the last four years Chuck has found both parents, everybody close to him has in some way become involved with the CIA, and Chuck and Sarah are finally together. To me Chuck keeping his spy work a secret, his parents abandonment, and his relationship with Sarah were the main points of the show. Now that all of that has been covered it doesn't seem necessary to keep the show going. The only other thing I would like to see is if Chuck and Sarah were to produce some sort of super spy baby. But that would almost have to be a spin-off since they would have to fast forward 25 years to when the child is grown up

Anonymous on February 9, 2011 at 10:26 PM

i think that sometime the show is going to end, all i ask for is at least one more season. I think after that, theyll run out of scenarios and characters to revisit.

Anonymous on February 9, 2011 at 10:29 PM

agreeing with anonymous 2 ahead of me, it would be sooo cool, if right after the last episode, they had an epilog episode, where they fast forwarded 25 years, and featured Sarah and Chuck's super-spy kid

Anonymous on February 9, 2011 at 11:06 PM

There better be a 5th season...

Anonymous on February 10, 2011 at 2:29 AM

all the show needs is a serious bad guy that will take 2 or 3 seasons to destroy just like the ring. The show needs some kind of a continuous storyline to lead it to its series finale. I know this is hard to do because the writers never know if there will be another season, but its better to die trying than to half ass your way through.

emily on February 10, 2011 at 2:37 AM

i agree with anonymous above me they had two seasons of the ring and i dont thimk volkof is done because lauren cohan the new recurring guest star is going to be volkofs daughter either shes going to know volkofs her father or she has never meant him if she knows shes the inside man and if she doesnt they might find out and thinks shes working for him but she isnt so then they tell her or not and if she does find out she becomes bad and volkof is back! all of you people are crazy with being okay with not having another season tht just show ur not a loyal chuck fan!!

Anonymous on February 10, 2011 at 11:36 AM

I agree with someone earlier that said something along the lines of "if episode 13 of this season had been the series finale, I'd have been fine with it". Ellie had her Baby, Chuck proposed to Sarah, they took down Volkoff, and everything was kind of nicely concluded.

Literally the only interesting direction they could take Chuck now is the one that involves Sarah's Mother and Father (as well as the "deceased" Langston Graham, Sarah's old boss. His body was never shown, thus he could come back). They've pounded the "evil syndicate" thing into the ground (first Fulcrum, then the Ring, and finally Volkoff) and only Sarah's past remains something of a mystery.

I think the greatest thing Chuck has going for it is that it is so close to syndication numbers. They could easily put it on the CW to finish out another season (and hit syndication) if Comcast isn't interested in keeping the show.

Fredrik on February 10, 2011 at 6:16 PM

What i thougt too was that what if a practicant ( dunno the word ), like a 15 years old kid started to practicanting at Buy More and Jeffster could get him and some more angels and then he maybe explores some crazy stuff:D just a little story for the buymore!

eleni on February 10, 2011 at 8:42 PM

the writers, and not only of chuck, have soooo many ideas...they just don't have the time and money to carry out these ideas especially when they work on a project ,like chuck, where they don't know whether or not the show is going to be canceled or is it going to be given another season. So never give up on Chuck and it's storyline cause we never know what the writers are going to come up with for next season..:D

p.s. episodes 9-14 my favs for this season:D!action-comedy is all that we need!God we need season 5!:Dcontinue the good work and keep it as nerdy as it can be!

penelope on February 10, 2011 at 9:33 PM

i love chuck and i think that such creative writers can easily get a fifth season !!so lets be positive !!!chuck rules !!from greece !!

There are still so many great stories to tell and stuff to do within the Chuck Universe. Lot's of potential in Sarah's history for example. I really hope they go for a 5th season. This show is unique. Greetings from Germany :)

Comment by Scott Scherer on February 11, 2011 at 2:21 AM

yes so many questions to be answered about Sarah's family. All I want is chuck and Sarah to get married and and at least a season 5. but I agree with all of you.
Long live chuck

Anonymous on February 11, 2011 at 6:39 AM

season 5, 6, 7 for chuck please...

Anonymous on February 11, 2011 at 9:36 PM

They tied up quite a few storylines in episode 13, but I still can't get enough Chuck. I'll be filling out my Subway comment cards in the hopes that the series will continue.

Anonymous on February 12, 2011 at 1:36 AM

I LOVE CHUCK FUCKERS :D NEED TOO MORE 3 SEASONS!

Anonymous on February 17, 2011 at 7:38 AM

too many shows have been cancelled this season already chuck is one of the best shows i've seen in a long time & there isn't anything like it around nor has there every been. the are a ton of fans of this show you would be making a huge mistake not renewing it for at least another 2 seasons. for once listen to the people that are watching!!! ok so some storylines are wrapping up good take a new angle start some new additional storylines heck there is an easy opening to re-open the current storyline with chuck's dad it's quite easy to bring him back & say he survived but i'd prefer new angles but i dont care i'll take any muthachucking thing

Anonymous on February 18, 2011 at 5:06 AM

What leaves me nervous is that the 13th episode was a series low. I think some of that is the Sheen nonsense but the show has not rebounded. A month ago a renewal seemed easy. Now, it is one of their lowest rated shows not cancelled as yet. The hope is that all of the movies Zachary is doing scheduled to be released in the fall will help the ratings. We all need to find the people doing the ratings books and plead with them to put "Chuck" in there.

Anonymous on March 1, 2011 at 6:42 AM

i think i would die without chuck. i want more chuck!!! if there is no season 5 i would literaly die!

i hope chucks new episodes are going to be about sarah's life, about her father and mother or maybe if she had a sibling or not!

and i think the "C,A,T.S" should go on! they are awsome!!!!!!!!!!!

Not all viewers are between the ages of 18 - 49 which seems to be the age they look at. My husband and I love to watch Chuck. We are 56 and 62. This shows combines the serious side of Alias (which we also loved) and the comedy side that Chuck gives us. It would be a sad day if this show gets cancelled. It's the only thing on Monday that we look forward to watching. I watch Dancing with the Stars but I tape them I can't take 2 hours of my life on one show so if Chuck is up with Dancing we will be watching Chuck. NBC go beyond your age group.

Anonymous on March 23, 2011 at 11:52 PM

Most likely, NBC would renew Chuck in order to gain money through syndication. Plus, it would keep the fans, such as me, happy.

Anonymous on April 1, 2011 at 6:10 AM

I agree with with many of the comments above me. I am a huge fan of Chuck. Almost everyone that I have told about the show has started watching it. It has a faithful following, but other than the Thursday lineup, NBC does little or nothing to promote the show. The last advertisement for Chuck was prior to the Olympics and yet it's viewership has remained constant. Heck, I wear my Buy More shirt to work to advertise the show. Bring Chuck back for a fifth season.
