"Oh No They Didn't": Stereotypes Strike the Intersect during the Holidays
I've been a fan of this show since the very beginning. Chuck’s clever, albeit, simple storylines are a perfect ending of my day at the beginning of the week. I also appreciate the show’s vast, diverse casting; giving audience a chance to see people of color in an hour-long dramedy. However, I was deeply disappointed in the "Chuck Versus Santa Claus" episode and paused my DVR to post this message.
In this episode, the one and ONLY Black woman I've ever seen in the history of this show--who wasn't a background player--is saddled with an "Oh no he didn't" line! Now, I’m only 30 minutes into the episode… however, thus far, this is her only line and sighting in the entire episode. If Morgan isn't saying "Wassup Homes?" when referring to Chuck, and Lester isn't screaming "Allah Akbar,” then why is it that the Black woman has to be depicted so stereotypically? Also, on a whole, I think it's time for us to graduate to a more open-minded view of the world—and the people in it. With that said, it’s time that we see more Black women on network TV who have layers and intelligence. Black women too can be sensual without being “on sale”; accomplished without being angry—positive, wives and mothers (in that order)… First Lady Michelle Obama is!
